Body Planes and Cavities


Planes
helps to describe human body by dividing the body with vertical and horizontal imaginary lines

Sagittal Plane: Divides body into right and left sides
Transverse Plan: Divides body into upper and lower portions
Frontal Plan: Divides body into front and back portions

Cavities
regions of the body that are broken into sections

Dorsal Cavity: posterior "dorsal" surface of the body
  • Cranial Cavity: contains the skull, the brain, and its coverings
  • Vertebral Cavity: contains vertebrae, spinal cord, and the beginning of spinal nerves. Formed by vertebrae.

Ventral Cavity: contains organs collectively called the viscera and is found in the front anterior side of the body
  • Thoracic Cavity- cavity of the chest
  1. Pleural Cavity: two cavities surrounding each lung
  2. Mediastinum: mass of tissues between the lungs
  • Abdominopelvic- cavity of the abdomen
  1. Abdominal Cavity:contains spleen, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, and large intestine.
  2. Pelvic Cavity: contains urinary bladder, portions of large intestine, and reproductive organs.
